Ingredients
  

  • 4 ripe bananas sliced
  • 1 box vanilla wafers
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whipped cream optional topping

Method
 

  1. In a saucepan, whisk sugar, flour, and egg yolks together
  2. Slowly add milk and cook over medium heat until thickened
  3. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract
  4. Let custard cool slightly
  5. In a dish, layer vanilla wafers, banana slices, and custard
  6. Repeat layers until ingredients are used
  7. Top with whipped cream if desired
  8. Chill for at least 4 hours before serving

Notes

  • Use ripe bananas for natural sweetness
  • Chill overnight for the best flavor and texture
  • Add extra wafers on top just before serving for crunch
  • Fresh custard gives the best traditional taste
